There are few simple steps you can follow to minimize the amount of spam you receive to your inbox.

If you are receiving email that is not even addressed to you:

What's happening here is that your main account (the one set up by default when you first joined dotCanada) is actually a "catch-all" account. This means that ANYTHING that's addressed to your domain (___@yourdomain.com) will end up in your main account.

For example, spammers will send emails to asdfasdf@yourdomain.com or any random address.

To avoid this type of spam, follow these 2 steps:

Set up a personalized email address (such as yourname@yourdomain.com or sales@yourdomain.com). To find out more about setting up email accounts, watch our email tutorials.

Configure cPanel so that anything not addressed to individual accounts you have set up will be automatically deleted before it ever hits your inbox.

Creating an email address:

Simply go into:

cPanel > Mail > Add/Remove/Manage Accounts, and create a new account.

You can use the same passwords you already have for cPanel, if you like.

Don't Accept Mail to Users Mailboxes That Don't Exist! - Default Address

By default, all unrouted email will be directed to your main mailbox. Login to your Cpanel, click on Mail, Default Address, at the bottom click Set Default Address.

Select the domain in the drop down menu (we recommend repeating this for all domains listed):

In the to: field - enter: fail: no such address

Two more tips: Consider changing the names of any accounts you've set up with obvious/common names, like info@yourdomain.com. A simple change to companyinfo@yourdomain.com can also stop a lot of spam, as many spammers make "guesses" about what real accounts you may have. You CAN stay one step ahead!

Also, your account has SpamAssassin set to 'on' by default. You can change the settings, or 'score', if you like, to increase or decrease what gets through.
